Not awful, just offal.
Calling this list essential is ridiculous.
More accurate: “100 In No Way Essential But Still Decent Films.”
Even then that’s a stretch.
Most of these movies are good but not great. There are a 1,000 like them. Saying that this 100 is better than some other 100 is at its heart wrong.

I agree this is more of a favorites list than an essential list, but there are some classics on this list that are definitely essential so saying that ALL the films are decent is ridiculous. Half the films are either decent or bad, but the other half are some of the best. Make Way for Tomorrow, Ace in the Hole, Le Plaisir, The Lonely Wife, Gerturd, Masculin Feminin, The Shooting, Memories of Underdevelopment, etc. are all essential viewing.
