very interesting- East German cinema is something i could do with getting to know! Erm, have they covered Renoir’s Toni as a fore-runner of Italian neo-realism? Clearly an influence on Visconti.

It’s mentioned in the book I believe, I forget if it was Renoir who gave Visconti the book The Postman Always Rings Twice which got him to make Ossessione.
