mizoguchi's "Russian/Soviet films i've been meaning to see (but shamefully neglected)"

Thanks for the mention!

From that list I’d most highly recommend Chapayev, which to my mind is sort of the uber-Soviet film, and The Irony of Fate, a movie that gives light romantic comedies a good name. The Lady with the Lapdog is exceptional, but Zvenigora is totally abstruse (then again, as you’re a fan of Sayat Nova ...). I’d also recommend Walking the Streets of Moscow and Carnival Night heartily.

My Friend Ivan Lapshin is one I’ve been trying to see for years (and just missed during a recent Russian films revival at Lincoln Center). And there are quite a few on your list that, shamefully, have still eluded me. But that’s why I made that big list: not to show off what I have seen, but to lay out what I want to see.

I’ve added your 2 recommendations- the sort of thing i was hoping for. Chess Fever and Fall of the Romanov Dynasty are on my rental list anyway, so now bumping up.

Along with The Irony of Fate, my two recommendations above are comedies, but I’d say that lightness of touch here should not be mistaken for superficiality.

But if nothing else, the world outside Slavdom should know that Russians have a long and illustrious history of comedy in film.

Oh, also on your list: Bed and Sofa is a remarkable film very much worth seeing.
