And what in the world is The Motherland of Electricity? I’ve never heard of it. Imdb doesn’t list it as a Shepitko film, and a quick Google search reveals only that it is one of the favorite films of the Brothers Quay. Any idea of the original title??

Oh the only other title i know for it is Homeland of Electricity (as mentioned in David Cook’s excellent book of world cinema- history of narrative film or similar title)

I am intrigued. Looks like Shepitko’s attempt at Socialist Realism. It appears to have been shelved by the authorities. I’ll add it to the big list—cheers.

Sorry, i should have read Cook’s book more carefully; didn’t have it to hand yesterday. Homeland of Electricity (Rodina electrichestva) was Shepitko’s section of a 1967 anthology film The Beginning of an Unknown Era (Nachalo nevedomogo veka) “commissioned by Goskino to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution but then suppressed”.

Well, apparently the unknown era was to remain unknown.

Thanks for the correction—I have added the larger film to the list, with a mention of both films within the item listing.
