WGA's 101 Greatest Screenplays

It’s unbelievable that such uneven hastily written by committee script as Casablanca’s is heading the list.

The problem with this list is that it seems to be based entirely on which movies have the most memorable quotes. There’s a lot more to a screenplay than a few memorable pieces of dialogue. That’s why Casablanca is #1, it’s not the best screenplay ever written (though I do think it’s a great script), but it’s filled with quotable dialogue. Also, look at some of the other stuff here; When Harry met Sally, Jerry Maguire, Forrest Gump, none of which are really great screenplays. They just have a few famous individual lines. As far as I’m concerned ‘adaptation.’ ought to be #1, that’s a script that genuinely offers a lot more then a few funny quips.
