Well, i hope he may have got the need for grand spectacle out of his system with the Olympic ceremony, cos his films have become a bit overloaded with his desire for colour, spectacle + movement, at the expense of the subtler characterisation and plot he was once well capable of. I liked his early films with Gong Li, e.g Red Sorgum, Raise the Red Lantern best

I’d describe the same transition in different terms: from astonishingly subversive masterpieces to bloated, excruciating paeans to tyranny.
I’m not in a position to blame him for doing what he feels he needs to do to keep his career afloat under a totalitarian regime, but what bothers me is how readily the later, pretty-colors film have been lapped up in the West without comment or seeming thought.
