Steamroller + the Violin? Well, i’ve never got round to seeing it, thinking it probably didn’t matter too much being a student effort. The Musicians though is one i’ve fancied seeing but may be awkward to get at

I would have thought that as a huge Tarkovsky fan you’d have seen S&V just out of a sense of completism, if nothing else!

S+V is nowhere near as abstruse as the other Tarkovsky films. It is simpler, and it is sweeter than anything else the director has done. That said, it has the same trademarks of a Tarkovsky film (which, to my mind, means a yearning for the transcendent within the quotidian).

Muzykancy is only ten minutes long, and one user review of it at imdb called it “pointless,” so don’t expect to be bowled over. That said, I think the more astute viewer may see quite a lot in this film (in fact, in a way it isn’t too far from the world of Tarkovsky described above). In North America, it is available as an extra on the Double Life of VeroniqueDVD (as a film that influenced Kieslowski).

(Speaking of which, I have been making progress through my list of previously unseen “Mizoguchi” films … )
