Aside from his international humanism, lyricism, love of nature, wit, warmth, mix of genres, his string of 1930’s masterpieces, his choreography, use of space, camera and composition, his willingness to experiment, going way beyond the single recognisable auteur style fashionable today, he was also the father of Italian neo-realism (see Toni). He easily surpassed his father, and is one of 2 prime contenders for the title of greatest director.
