Filmsite.org's 100 Memorable and Great 'Chick' Flicks

Thanks — 3 years ago

Bravo for including “Somewhere in Time” ( SIT ) on your list.

The American Film Institute did not include it in their top 100 most romantic. Tragic! Too much focus on box office numbers. The reason this 20th year collectors edition exists is because of the efforts of the fan club of this movie.

Yes,SIT has a fan club-only a scant few movies have one. It’s called INSITE or International Network of Somewhere in Time Enthusiasts. It was created in 1990 by a man named Bill Shepard who thought he was the “only one” who loved this film. He put an ad in a movie magazine and the strong response to that entry created the impetus for INSITE.

There is an official website which is somewhereintime.tv There is memorabilia, DVD’s, books and stories on this site run by the President and Editor of their quarterly magazine, Jo Addie. Jo was an extra on the movie and her story is on that site called “Barely in Time” Back issues of the Quarterly are available which provide a rich history of all aspects about the movie. I have all the issues which have enriched my life and caused me to appreciate the movie all the more.

Here is the best part. Each and every year since 1991, members of INSITE gather at the movies filming location at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Isl., Michigan. Here fans of the movie along with cast and crew members gather to watch, celebrate and honor what they believe to be the most romantic movie ever made. There are scene re-enactments, memorabilia for sale, classes and walking tours at the very same sites where the movie was filmed. People dress in period outfits that were worn in 1912,as depicted in the movie. I have attended this weekend and it was one of the most memorable weekends of my life. There are DVD’s expertly done by Jo and Jim Addie from many of the early weekends at Mackinac, including visits by Jane Seymour and Chris Reeve, the Star on Holywood Blvd for Chris and another for Jane and many, many more.

Half of the membership of INSITE, by the way,are men like myself who are hopeless romantics. Long live the “chick” flicks and the women AND men who love them!

So thanks again for including SIT on your list and maybe “in time” the movie will gain even more attention as a wonderful relief from the chaotic world we live in today.
