I definitely disagree!
I finally sat down with Pride and Prejudice and just loved it. It was hilarious and witty.
Maybe you just didn’t like the writing style or content.
That doesn’t make it garbage.
I'd go further.
19th Century (well, maybe, 1820 to 1880) English novels written for adults are poison. Dickens, Eliot, the Bronte sisters, Austen: all guilty of suck. Children’s literature is another story.
But that’s just my opinion.
All of Jane Austen is worthy
Jane Austen simply could not write a bad sentence. Reading her works is a pleasure and perhaps should not be read by people unable to appreciate good writing.
Well said, Aubrey.
Brad, you need to stop focusing on the author’s audience and the purpose of typical literature of the time—look at Austen’s work as art. If you’ve read even a sentence of any of her novels and you believe them to be “garbage,” then your taste is in question, not the merit of her writing, which is excellent.
i’ve read plenty of quite amazing works and i don’t know if i would go as far as calling her work garbage but to say that she is an amazing author is far overstated. many authors have their good moments in writing but truly remarkable writers write and the world shakes. she just safely states unremarkable instances and makes it sound pretty
