The Guardian's Alternative Top 100 Albums Ever

... I’d never comment lists. And I know, it’s a game, but, if you write the “best ever”... c’mon… two albums by Nick Drake in the top five, two albums by Todd Rundgren in the top ten, and the only album issued in the last 25 years they could think of for the top ten is Rain Dogs? Nothing more alternative than Tom Waits since 1980?!

(I know, the Guardian is a newspaper, their target is very general, blahblah, but… whoa!)

i agree completely. this is not a definition of ‘alternative’ as i see it.

Yes! I also personally think R.E.M.’s ‘Murmur’ and not LRP should be on there. I was surprised to see Jane Siberry on here, especially WIWAB. I would think ‘No Borders Here’ is more “alternative.” And no Kate Bush or Laurie Anderson or Mary Margaret O’Hara? Though I will say, although a surprise, yay for Laura Nyro.

It was a poll of a large number of musicians and industry types from memory. ie. not what The Guardian liked.

And I’d not be surprised if ‘Murmur’ and Kate Bush were on the disallowed list. It was supposed to be ‘alternative’ in a “vote for anything but these pre-defined usual suspects” sense.
