New Zealand Cinema

Isn't... — 3 years ago

Lord of the rings, King Kong, The Last Samurai and The Chronicles of Narnia considered NZ Cinema?

They were all filmed there. And if not all of them are, LOTR and King Kong should be because the NZ company WETA did a large majority of the special and visual effects, as my cousins husband worked on both LOTR and King Kong.

My intention was to try to stick to the by Kiwis for Kiwis type, not really those for Hollywood as it were. Those films seem more like blockbusters that were filmed in NZ than anything else. I mean, none of them are even set in NZ.

Yeah..

I guess so, though LOTR is definately seen as a Kiwi movie more than even those real kiwi movies. There are almost no kiwis that havn’t seen it, because believe me, I am one.
Its the film that NZ is most proud of.
Every kiwi seems to know someone that worked on that film. And if they dont, they live near somewhere it was filmed.

I'll give you LOTR and we barter the rest?

LOTR is a giant ad for Tourism New Zealand! The NZ landscape is the silent cast member. These films also made the world start to look at NZ as a place to make films due to the vision of Weta. Trust me, I can well see the validity for this series.

I was trying to kick start this list with as many Kiwi films I could think of before moving on to the blockbusters, if at all. I was hesitant for fear of having to add every film that is filmed in NZ (half of Narnia is filmed in the Czech Republic) or features Kiwis (a list of nothing but Russell Crowe films and Shortland Street actors wouldn’t be much of a list). That would be like an Aussie Cinema list of Matrix, Independence Day, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Scooby Doo, and Superman! Hardly indicitive of a national cinema.
