Photoediting of the images is usually required and it is therefor handy to have a fast and easy to use app for viewing and editing them. I recommend the high quality and free Fast Stone Image Viewer

Listsofbests always makes the images square so I usually upload square “crops” if they make sense (for 43places for example)
I also usually resize the images to around 400 pixels since it’s the largest size you’ll see without clicking twice and since then the image isn’t too big and slow to load (and then you can still keep the jpeg quality up)..
It can also be handy to use something such as the search options for the CreativeCommons.org or Wikimedia Commons communities to find some pics. These you can also get as Firefox Search plugins
