Erm,
Sorry to say that this is a Movie List of Operas – everything on here I’ve seen on DVD or Video. Actually, I’m going to change the list title now… Sorry to disappoint! I would have LOVED to have seen all of these live!!
Mind you, I’ve been in 4 operas this year – 2 student (as small roles) and 2 professional (as chorus). But that doesn’t really count as “seeing” them live either….
Sheesh! I don’t think… Oh no. I lie. I saw Die Fledermaus live – if you count that as opera!

Lol – of course it counts if you were in the opera. What operas were you in? That’s about 500 times more impressive than just seeing it from the audience.
On Saturday we finished a run of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” – with Richard Bonynge conducting!! That was great! Very good cast all round. Elvira Fatykhova (who sang Lucia) is, I swear to you, a rising star. She’s the complete package – sings divinely (Dame Joan gave her a standing ovation), looks great and can ACT!
In May we did Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliet” with a more local Aussie cast. They were good too. In this opera R&J take FOREVER to die. I mean FOREVER.
The student operas were Poulenc’s “Les Mamelles de Tirésias”, in which I was the Newspaper Woman and Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les Sortilèges” in which I was lucky enough to sing the small but beautiful role of the Squirrel.
Yay for opera!

Brilliant! I’ve sung in the chorus for Nozze di Figaro and have stage managed for Suor Angelica and Carmen – so I appreciate how amazingly difficult it is to sing and I’m always in awe of performers. Are you in University now?
I’m gonna go look up Elvira Fatykhova right now :-D
I reckon give Elvira a couple more years – she’s 36 now, and I think this Lucia with Bonynge might really start big things for her.
Yup, I’ve gone back to Uni to do some postgrad study in opera. Realistically, given that I’m over 30, I’m hoping to come out as a much more versatile opera chorus member who might get the occasional cover or even small role (!!!). But we’ll wait & see.
The first professional thing I ever sang in was the chorus for Le Nozze di Figaro! So do you still stage manage? I get along well with stage managers!
