Miles Franklin Literary Award (Australian Fiction)

Just want to say that it’s all very lovely for people to go through & change the version of the book listed to whatever it is that takes their fancy &/or guarantees them a good night’s sleep, but it’s not so good for those of us who’ve already ticked off the book versions that were originally listed. WE suddenly find that we’ve apparently read only half the books we thought we’d read.

That can get a bit frustrating.

I did this for a reason

I am the offender here. I deliberately went through and changed the editions to the most used by other users, not by me. It had nothing to do with my fancy or a good night’s sleep. The one’s that were on the list before didn’t have photos and in some cases didn’t link to Amazon. This way more people will stumble upon this list and are more likely to adopt it, making it improve in the rankings. So, sorry I caused you the terrible inconvenience of marking some of the new ones as read but I don’t apologize for trying to help the whole 43 Things work better.

That's OK!

No need to apologize for being part of a dynamic community. I probably shouldn’t have written that post so late at night – came across a bit stronger than intended. Ooops! Sorry – I didn’t mean to offend you. (Edit: I should say “I didn’t consider the offence I might cause”. Sorry again!)

I guess I’ve also seen the aftermath of similar changes to Peter Boxall’s 1001 book list. And it’s happened more than once there, which (with 1001 books) does become a little tedious.

I’ve no real quibble with what’s been changed in this list – and indeed the “pictured” and “Amazoned” versions that have been substituted generally weren’t listed on All Consuming when the list was originally entered. But there were 1 or 2 deliberate choices away from pictures… For example, the “Tirra Lirra by the River” version originally listed was chosen because my preference was to see (and acknowledge) the author of the book on the list rather than have a picture – given that I had to choose. But I understand that my version of best pick is not everyone else’s.

So I guess if I (and indeed all of us!) can cope with versions coming and going according to individual’s versions of ‘best’, it will be frustrating at times, but at least dynamic!

I too wish

there were not so many grey boxes. But I guess we have to put up with the US centricity.

I do wish there were more people working on this list, but I bet it’s because the books are so hard to find, especially the early ones.
