AFI 100 Greatest Movies of All Time (1998 ed.)

I was really into finishing this list, as there are so many classics on it I’ve always meant to watch anyway and I enjoyed working from it blah blah blah. But now I have only 12 left, and most of them are westerns. Now, I like westerns, but not that much. I’m only now noticing how many there seem to be on this list and it seems pretty disproportionate.

okay, I lied a little- the ones that aren’t Westerns are mostly 3 hour war movies. I have pretty much the same opinion regarding those though.

but westerns on these lists arent strictly westerns in that they infuse many other genres and address larger and more morality based issues. High Noon is a man standing up for what he believes is right, with no one behind him, having to confront death, and it just happens to be set in a western time and place.
I wouldn’t let it stop you, just as I didn’t let what I perceived to be girl or more feminine movies stop me from completing it (My fair lady, west side story, other musicals, all about eve, etc)

I noticed that too...
but now that I’ve seen them all, I think it’s more that I never watched very many westerns, even the good ones.
