Lindsay's "Best Non-Fiction Books"

Suggestions... — 1 year ago

First of all, great list!
If you like Frances Gies, I’d suggest Frances & Joseph Gies’ (Gies’s?) Life in a Medieval Village. (Life in a Medieval City and Life in a Medieval Castle are good too, but Village is my favourite.) Also, A History of the Breast and A History of the Wife by Marilyn Yalom are really good.

oh man. i’ve read all the gies’ books (except for the one about knights – not my thing), and village is definitely a good one. i’ll have to check out those other two.
btw, i definitely recommend ‘at day’s close’ if you like history. very interesting pre-electric history.

Wow, that book looks amazing! And it’s at my local library branch, which is clearly a sign that I should read it immediately. Thanks for the recommendation.
Heh…I had to laugh at “if you like history.” It’s more like a fiendish obsession….

completely understand – i’m studying medical anthropology in school, but read tons of medieval history and populist history in my free time.

Interesting – and very specific! :)

Anthropology was (one of) my majors for a while, but I ended up focussing on history instead.
