Pretty much exactly one year ago I decided I wanted to finish this list: at that time I had 44 left and I now have 7.5 (I’m half way through ‘Native Son’). I’m really glad I got into this list in particular as it covers a wider range than a lot of similar ones do- i.e. it recognises the value of good children’s literature, and also includes a number of historically and culturally important works that have merit beyond the purely literary. The current goal is to finish the rest by the end of 2007- wouldn’t seem so hard if it didn’t include ‘Finnegan’s Wake’ and 2 more Henry James, who I’m not the hugest fan of!

That's an

amazing achievement. I’m sure you will finish it in 2007 too.

update?

Did you finish? I read Finnegans Wake this year, as well as a couple of James’s later novels, so I understand what you were up against. I was trying to finish the Modern Library list and those were the same books slowing me down. I am pleased to say I finished them all. Now time to turn to this list.

Good luck! Or, congratulations!

alas

Finnegan’s Wake proved my undoing! I finished everything else but I still have about 250 pages left of FW- which as I’m sure you already know could easily take me all the rest of 2008 to complete! Revised goal is to finish it by end of January. Thanks for asking, and good on you for finishing the Modern Library list, I still have about 25 to go on that one, or about 40 if you count all the series and trilogies they count as one book.
