Greg's "My Own Personal Top 100 Albums of All Time"

A nice mix of the obvious and the unexpected, but I can’t condone the inclusion of greatest hits packages. Singles bands can be honored by lists of greatest artists and songs, but a list of ALBUMS should be thus. And the 10 year rule, while admirable in the face of the majority that leans from 1990 and forward, is awfully strict. As someone who owns more than a thousand albums, I’d say close to a third of them are from ’97 or later.

The 10 years rule
Another reason I have it is the tendency for us to favor the “shiny new thing” over something we’ve owned for awhile. It isn’t until I’ve owned an album for awhile that I decide if it really IS that good…or it was just good at the time.
And again, to cut out greatest hits albums shortchanges pop bands, girl groups, dance music and a lot of R&B. For example, the Ronettes always had garbage B sides to singles on purpose because of Spector’s philosophy of “controlling” airplay on what he thought was the hit. That means their albums in general are rife with filler. Does that mean they weren’t a good act? I think a well-chosen anthology makes the case they were.
