1) A lot of movies on this list only have one famous scene. Some have none. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be on the list. And besides, A Night at the Opera is hysterical almost from beginning to end. It’s a classic and most definitely belongs on here. 2) I agree, Raging Bull is too high – I think Taxi Driver is the better Scorsese film – but who cares really. A lot of film critics rank Raging Bull very highly so it’s not too out of place. 3) Giant does not belong anywhere near this list, but you can make a case for Rebel Without a Cause. 4) You do realize that AFI isn’t making these selections? This is a poll of prominent film critics, actors and other movie-types. AFI sends out ballots, they respond. If AFI loses credibility with you because of a certain film’s ranking, that would be pretty silly. 5) Yeah, Sophie’s Choice? WTF? And lastly, The Third Man was excluded because it was a UK production. The other UK films on this list are UK/USA co-productions – with the exception of A Clockwork Orange. But since Kubrick is an American director and has several other films on the list already, an exception was made.
