Hank Williams album — 2 years ago

First of all, not a big country fan. But even so, Hank Williams was a big influence on music, during his time period. I can see why he is always included in “popular” music collections that are usually all rock and roll. Hey, my dad liked him! So you know I have to respect that.

Anyhow, the album they chose to represent him was not made during his life time. In fact, as they explain at the website, “albums” were not really made during his life time. So this is a new, collection of his work.

There are many other similar “collections” available. I happen to have a bigger box set, that is an anthology of practically everything he ever recorded, one that is listed on other “Best Of” lists, (see the Rolling Stone 500 list). I am sure any similar sets could be substituted for this particular choice by TIME magazine, though this one might be more affordable if you are actually purchasing it.

A flaw with MOST "best of" lists

I’m glad this list includes anthologies. Before SGT. PEPPER, whole genres were geared to singles and singles ALONE…even after the advent of the LP (around 1948).

That’s why Motown/R&B, girl groups, 50s era rock and roll seem to get short shrift on these types of lists. I’d be hard-pressed to choose any particular Chuck Berry ALBUM as one of the “best ever” but a great, well-chosen anthology like THE GREAT 28 is hard to argue AGAINST for this type of list.
