This is one list i would certainly recommend pursuing- with my favourite films at #101 and 104..

This and the They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They? Top 100 were the first two cinematic lists I thought might be worth pursuing. I haven’t pursued them unrelentingly in the years since and so I still have yet to complete either, but they have always remained the “real” greatest-hits lists in the back of my mind.
the first list that really got me going was John Kobal’s book the Top 100 Movies that came out in the late 80’s- at that time i’d never heard of Mizoguchi or Tarkovsky, who had 3 films each, and so the obsession began.

Cineastes who turn up their noses at all lists are ignoring the fact that they have very real uses. To kowtow to any one list as gospel, to let a list dictate one’s own tastes is undesirable, of course, but to use lists as springboards for exploration can be a wonderful thing!
