Steven Jay Schneider's 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die - 2nd ed. 2005 - "The Shining" cover
Notes on some hard to find films — 27 weeks ago
Stanley Kwan’s “The Actress” at no. 851 (book p. 822) is not called by that title in the DVD release, but rather you will find it under the title Centre Stage (with the British spelling). (amazon)
If you can, watch the 2004 Director’s Cut verion which puts back over 30 minutes cut by the studio from the original release.
Also, Pasazerka (no. 401) is available on a R2 DVD from Second Run DVD as are The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short ( De Man die zijn haar kort liet knippen ) (no. 446), David Holzman’s Diary, Ucho, and Marketa Lazarova. They will be putting out a new version of Jancso’s masterpiece, Roundup, in the Spring.
There are three films by Taiwanese master director Hou hsiao-hsien on the list. The Puppetmaster (no. 859) is available in an R1 DVD, though Fox Lorber have inexplicably butchered it with an inferior, full framed transfer. It is available via Netflix.
Time to Live, Time to Die and City of Sadness are both hard to find on DVD with western language subtitles. There was a nice box set of early Hou films with English subtitles, now out of print. You can check at yesasia.com to get info about it.
If enough people sign up there, perhaps the distributor Sino Movies will reissue the box set.
And finally, Bengali master Ritwik Ghatak has two films on the list. The BFI has put out a very nice DVD of Meghe Dhaka Tara, but not Subarnarekha. One place to find this is Calcuttaweb.com who specialize in Bengali language materials; they are located in the US.
