IMDb's "Top 250"

Add to my lists | Print this list

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) invites its users to rate movies, then compiles a list of those with the highest average weighted rating. For a movie to appear on the list, there must be at least 1300 ratings for it given by "regular IMDb voters".

The formula for calculating the Top 250 Films gives a true Bayesian estimate:

weighted rating (WR) = (v / (v+m)) x R + (m / (v+m)) x C
where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 1300)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.8)

The list is restricted to theatrical releases; it does not include shorts, TV movies, straight-to-video releases, TV series or miniseries, or any documentaries. For the IMDB top 50 documentaries, see http://www.listsofbests.com/list/11635

Where's the rest? — 2 years ago

There are so many good films missing from this list: What about Fried Green Tomato’s, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Breakfast at Tiffany’s etc etc etc

It won’t let me change the information at the top to say “Last updated: Jan. 10, 2007”, because it has been updated today.

My poor little video shop — 3 years ago

I’m trying to make it to 80% – but I’ve rented nearly everything the shop has on the list.

Then again, a lot I have rented so tick off has sucked. Harold and Maude – worst movie I’ve seen in yonks. All quiet on the western front – boring and depressing.

Most of my fav movies are on the list – I would have liked to see Brewsters Millions make it though.

I can't believe it! — 3 years ago

Ferris Beuller’s Day Off and Better Off Dead aren’t on the list!!!!! This is sooooo wrong!!! Two of the best movies of the eighties and they didn’t make the list? I need to go to IMDB and correct this at once! :-D
