Donald E. Westlake has written many comic crime capers chronicling the misadventures of criminals John Archibald Dortmunder, Andy Kelp, Stan Murch, and Tiny Bulcher. The series consists of many books and several movies.
According to h2g2: "Readers of the series know that, no matter how well thought-out and meticulously planned the crime, Dortmunder and his cronies will find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The plots typically follow a standard pattern, in which they plan a caper and watch their plans unravel, often due to events beyond their control."
