List restored — 12 weeks ago

I restored the places on the list (Vegas and the Canyon were missing) and corrected the order or places. The about.com source link did no longer work so I removed it. I used the following sources: site 1
& site 2, these lists are identical.

Please don’t change this list again, create your own version if you disagree with the order or places.

#50? — 24 weeks ago

where’s number 50?

I don’t think people were avoiding Europe, it’s just that we Brits like to travel (all those dodgy historical connections – family or otherwise), and long-haul destinations are popular. I guess it’s more that people take their neighbouring countries in the rest of Europe for granted – we’re so familiar with the best that Europe has to offer that we don’t think it worth remarking on as everyone in the UK knows about it. The longer haul destinations will always somehow seem more ‘exotic’ and impressive, as the cultural differences are greater (whilst many Brits don’t think of themselves as ‘European’, the truth is we share a common history and culture, and are in fact closer to the rest of Europe than connections to the US (politically at least) might suggest.

Places were picked by viewers of a BBC program — 49 weeks ago

The places were actually selected by BBC viewers not the BBC itself.
Viewers of the Travel Program which was braodcast on BBC1 were asked to contact the BBC and reveal their choice of 50 places to see before you die.

All the replies were gathered together to make up this list which brings together all the viewer responses of the top 5o most popular places.

It seems that they made an effort to avoid picking lots of European stuff and being accused of bias, and did this to the extent that Europe is underrepresented instead…

A good set of places to visit — 1 year ago

A great list, but like all lists, lots of great places have been left out.
