The challenge runs from December 2005 when it was originally posted until the conclsion of the games.

The item read can be fiction or non-fiction written as poetry, short story, novel, essay, biography, etc. In fact some folks are using anthologies to find multiple authors from Asian or African nations in one place, since there are so many countries where the published works are not written or translated into English. The challenge was originally to consider only works by an author with citizenship in the country but has been modified over time (by some) to include authors born in a country, lived in a country, or for works primarily set in a country. Thus Alexander McCall Smith who now lives in Scotland, is considered by me to be from Zimbabwe as is Wiesel from Hungary, Mistry from India and Camus from Algeria. The Good Earth is written about China by Pearl Buck who lived in China so for me that counts. I didn’t make it this far in life without creating some of my own rules.

According to an article in Wikipedia, the list includes all of the countries expected to take part in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. As you can see, there are a lot of holes in my list at the moment and I’m hoping that folks here at All Consuming/ 43Things/listsofbests can help me out with suggestions of titles and/or books themselves from countries that are blank. If you are a BookCrosser (or want to be) I’m open to trades of books from my “Available” and To Be Read” shelves for books you have that can help me finish this challenge. I would like to read the books on my TBR pile before I actually trade them, but I can be very flexible.
