Orion Millennium's "Crime Masterworks Books"

Add to my lists | Print this list

The Crime Masterworks is a series of books published by Orion Millennium which attempts to re-print classic Crime books.

Whenever possible I’ve added the Crime Masterworks edition to this list, but since they’re not all listed on allconsuming this was not always possible.

The list isn’t pretty, but it does serve its purpose of providing a checklist for a great reading list.

Finding a definitive list of the SF & Fantasy Masterworks was quite easy, but the Crime Masterworks are rather more ellusive – feel free to contribute a source if you know of a definitive list.

In all likelihood this series was the brainchild of one or several Gollancz Editors who has/have since (been?)moved on. Whoever was left had no love for any of the series and has slowly buried them. They are all probably destined to remain incomplete, which is a great pity.

The Crime Masterworks Mystery — 6 years ago

The publisher’s website only lists 24 of them because the other 30+ have either gone out of print or have been re-released in a different format. This ultimately makes nonsense out of collecting all of them. Another issue with the series is that they stopped numbering them after 40. Why? I do not know but I have my suspicions. I think that it was to give the series a more nebulous feel so that any book could fit any where and also allow the release of a spate of Hammett’s and Thompson’s at the same time.

My gut feeling about the series is that it will end shortly, (pity) as there seems to be no books listed for release in 2007.

The other issue is regarding the listings in Amazon. Unfortunately Amazon has taken to listing books that were never in, or going to be in the series. They did this with the SF Masterworks, (Camp Concentration & 334) and I think this is the situation with The Steam Pig

Feel free to comment. It would be good to find definitive answers to all these issues

I added a couple more that weren’t on the list: The Big Knockover and The Steam Pig. They’re listed as part of the series on amazon.co.uk, but not amazon.com. I also switched The Murders in the Rue Morgue to the Crime Masterworks edition.

I don’t know why the publisher’s own website only lists 24 of them!

Numbering of the books — 6 years ago

Books 1-40 are numbered.

Books 41 onwards are not.

I do not know why the publishers decided to discontinue their numbering system.
