Ranking from Films101.com.

Films that have been strongly recommended by critics and filmmakers. The bulk come from all-time best movie lists and major movie award lists (with around 7000 ranked). New movie releases and new DVD releases are added regularly when picked by selected critics. Care has been taken to include as many foreign film releases as possible, making this a truly international movie list.

Note: A few films are tied for their ranking: #42 and #43; #98 and #99.

Updated the list — 41 weeks ago

I checked the list source at films101.com and noticed that a lot had changed so I updated it to reflect the current list (Feb. ‘09). The ranking order had changed significantly and I also had to delete some titles and add a few new ones.

It seemed that we were keeping it at 101 titles so that’s where I stopped. There are actually 102 films though, because #35 and #36 are actually tied for 35th place (The Conformist and Dr. Strangelove).

One thing did bother me though when I was checking the source website. When you click on ‘Top Films’ (http://films101.com/5starr.htm ), you are presented with a list of 500 films instead of 100 or 101. If anyone would like, I wouldn’t mind adding the other films to more accurately reflect the source. I decided not to do that on my own, though because I didn’t want to make too many changes without community approval.
