There is no debate. It is Wong Kar-wai.
You just romanize the name the same way they do. It’s that easy.
If they want to transpose their name or adopt an English name (for example, Tony Leung instead of Leung Chiu-wai) then they will do that. You don’t need to do it for them.

Kar-Wai Wong v. Wong Kar-Wai? Where do people fall in the debate about transposing surnames for Western audiences? I think that he used ‘wkw’ in his BMW film, which isn’t on here. I think it was called ‘The Follow’.
