The Only Movie List You'll Ever Need

Add to my lists | Print this list

For everyone who is unhappy with other "top or best of" lists, this is for you. I’ve posted this as a definitive list, because no, I haven’t seen them all. This list was compiled from generally accepted industry prestige. It is an exhaustive list that includes the 400 films nominated for the AFI Top 100 American films list, Roger Ebert’s Great Movies Series, The best of foreign cinema from the Criterion Collection, as well as selections from Entertainment Weekly, Time Magazine, Leonard Maltin, and many other Academy Award winners and nominees. Enjoy.

Thief of Bagdad — 5 weeks ago

I’ve replaced the 1940 Thief of Bagdad with the earlier Douglas Fairbanks version to reflect the AFI list.

Reordering Complete, — 10 weeks ago

I’ve finished reordering everything but the first 400 (the original AFI nominations). I haven’t decided to alphabetize those with the others or not. I personally kind of like them separated.

On Numbering — 10 weeks ago

I’m going to begin incorporating the more recent entries at the end of the list with the rest. I think this will make it easier for everyone to find the titles they’re looking for.

Untitled — 10 weeks ago

Someone mentioned to me that Sideways was not good enough to be remembered in ten years. After thinking about this for a while, I agreed. I have replaced that film with There Will be Blood. I am confident that P.T. Anderson’s film stands a better chance of leaving a lasting impression.

Changes — 1 year ago

I’m going to be making a few changes over the next couple of days, trying to replace some of the question mark entries with those that have pictures.

Another Year — 1 year ago

Well, it’s been another great year filled with many noteworthy films. To make room for the newest entries I have combined Before Sunrise and Before Sunset into one entry. I felt justified in doing this since the sequel was only a continuation of the original story. I also combined Blue, White, and Red into the Three Colors Trilogy, and removed the Our Hospitality/Sherlock Jr. entry. The latter was removed, because it is also included in The Art of Buster Keaton. I didn’t think it warranted multiple entries.

Some good choices, but WAY too much mediocre Hollywood pap, at the expense of far more deserving foreign films. Working Girl, Stand and Deliver, Mrs. Doubtfire… are you kidding me?

This is a great list -the best one so far in this category.

The End of the List — 1 year ago

For the final 150 or so titles I have chosen mostly modern films that have reached critical contemporary classic status, several of them released after the AFI selections in 1998.
