Film a Škola: The Golden Foundation of Czech and Slovak Cinema
"This opinion poll took place between 1998-1999 as preparation for drafting a series of Cinema Letters written to cover screenings of Project 100-1999. The main organisers were Jan and Ivana Lukešovi, who approached 100 Czech film specialists. The result was a list of Czech and Slovak films and of these the top 50 films with the largest number of votes each became known as the Golden Foundation of Czech and Slovak Cinema.
"The most important prerequisite for the entire project is a quality selection of films which has to fulfill the following criteria: Quality, Comprehensibility (list geared toward high schoolers guided by teacher), Representativeness, Selectiveness.
"Golden Foundation Project Concept: A list of the most significant works of world or Czech and Slovak cinema compiled on a regular basis by opinion polls conducted with the aid of cinema experts. Both foundations have to be drawn up from a limited number of titles and on the basis of the adjudged standings of key personalities and periods in the history of cinema.
"The two foundations currently comprise 175 foreign and 50 Czech and Slovak films. This list has to be subjected to a new evaluation once every ten years with possible replacements by more recent films. Animation, experimental films, students’ works and short features should also be included. These short films do not have to be subjected to an elaborate polling process as a limited number of ciema experts can be trusted to achieve a wise selection."
