Mizoguchi made over 80 films, many in the silent era, most now lost. Unfortunately some that remain are in poor condition and/or not easy to get hold of. In 2005 Mizoguchi was rightly voted the world’s greatest ever director by top French publication Cahiers du Cinéma. Yet most film-goers have never heard of him. Try Sansho the Bailiff and Ugetsu for starters.
