CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music (Harvest House Publishers, 2001) is a book edited by Thom Granger, based on an article in CCM Magazine that chronicles the history of Contemporary Christian Music by examining what are considered to be the best albums of the genre. To date, it is the only book to rank CCM albums.

Unguarded? — 2 years ago

I think Amy Grant’s “Unguarded” should be on this list. It is one of the greatest CCM albums ever. Also Petra’s “On Fire!” and “Rock Cries Out” are excellent albums – they are very underrated. I wonder which is the line you should keep as the limit of CCM and secular music. Albums like U2’s “War” and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” are brilliant material – and I think they are CCM – and so does one of my friends. Still, I love some of the albums on this list. I have bought many albums because of this list. Recently I ordered “Slow Train Coming” (Bob Dylan), “Sanctuary” (Twila Paris), and “A Morning like This” (Sandi Patti) among others. The jewels I have found are for example “Only Visiting This planet”, “The Turning”, “Life Love & Other Mysteries”, and “Immigrant’s Daughter”.

No Michael Card? — 4 years ago

Michael Card has consistently produced great work…. He even went through the entire Bible in song. Very very few other Christian artists can compete with his musical talent and lyric writing. His two disc album “The Ancient Faith” should be in the top 5, at least. Personally, I would put it second after Larry Norman’s “Only Visiting This Planet.”

“The Ancient Faith,” as the title suggests, traces early faith from Eden through Ezekiel and the Babylonian captivity.

Another top 5 quality album from Card is “The Life” which is the story of Jesus’ ministry.

Sorry, Amy Grant is very good, but not #1.

Looking for some of the 'hard-to-get' stuff — 7 years ago

Found a few MP3s of Mark Heard’s available for free download at pastemusic.com Also stumbled across some for Michael Omartian.

We own the Keith Green “Ministry Years” 2CD set and when I compared track listings, I found that all but 1 from SO YOUWANNA GO BACK TO EGYPT? are found there (“Pledge my Head to Heaven” is the M.I.A. cut) so I’m gonna play a little fast and loose and consider myself to have heard that one.

Why this list is REALLY hard to complete — 7 years ago

Christian contemporary music is notorious for its short shelf life. Many of these albums have been critically lauded since their time of release but have been out of print since the year after! Case in point: Mark Heard appears 3 times on this list (#32,#29,#4 and if you count the tribute album to him..#25) but every one of those is out of print, meaning you can’t borrow it at the library. Hearing it means shelling out often high collector’s prices and I’m not willing to do that without having heard the music in question.

Any one got any pointers to places I might be able to stream the FULLSONGS from the albums listed here?
