The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana's "The Sixty-Four Arts of the Kama Shastra"

Add to my lists | Print this list

If you get a non-Burton translation of the Kama Sutra, you find the following list of accomplishments which make up the Kama Shastra, which when achieved and combined with the sexual arts of the Kama Sutra, allowed a woman to keep company with the men of the community at "the gate." This woman is said to have attained the role of "Ganika" in the community. As with the courtesans of 17th Century Italy, the women who achieved these things were considered "educated" and really were the only "educated" women in the community.
