Looks like objectivists and scientologists blitzed the poll.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance wasn’t a novel when last I read it …

And too much Robert Heinlein on the list (I love him, but …) especially when authors like Winterston and Tom Robbins are totally unrepresented!
