Virgin Records's "Top 100 Albums (To Give a Listen)"

Add to my lists | Print this list

The Beatles’ album Revolver has been voted the greatest record of all time in a massive survey of musical tastes. Music from the 1960s and 70s dominate the top 100 but contemporary bands such as Radiohead and U2 and 80s bands like The Smiths have established their musical credentials in the hall of fame. in chronological order?

The Ramones? — 43 weeks ago

Why aren’t The Ramones on this list? They invented punk for Pete’s sake! Everybody claims that The Sex Pistols invented punk, but in reality, The Ramones came along first!

I own 80% of these and most have garnished very high critical reviews for years. It’s easy to critique the rankings and some specific inclusions or omissions but in general this is a good list…especially if you focus just on the rock albums. Fans of classic jazz and other genres would be better suited with other lists. I prefer to keep my top 100 Jazz list seperate from pop/rock. I also think rap and country should have their own list.

I’ve seen other lists with a much higher skew towards 1990 and after albums…..

Wait.. — 1 year ago

Yup, geez louise has pointed out a true thing here. The person that posted this list was probably on heavy drugs or brithish(probably both). Since when is Nevermind better that Exile on Main St. ? Yup, heavy narcotics. Oh.. wait.. THE BENDS IS BETTER THAN THE DOORS ? Jesus Crist.. when will you people learn ? Go talk to your grandparents and your parents (if they are in their 60’s or late 50’s and ask them to give you a little musical lesson.

Just need to hear that one and I can check off another one..

Why in God’s name is stuff like Hounds of Love below rubbish like Jagged Little Pill? And for God’s sake, were these people on substances when making this? It’s so scattered. It’s not even like you can TELL it’s got a certain edge (like Q and Pitchfork do)... Not that I like that kind of sway anyway.

And no London Suede? Aren’t they a bloody requirement for a best of list?

This list is shite ! — 2 years ago

Who wrote this list ? Secondly, what the fuck were they injecting ? and finaly, where were all the good albums ?

geez louise! — 3 years ago

okay, whoever made this list is a: british, b: favors pop and c. is quite young or really quite out of it.

there’s nice music on this list but what about parliament funkadelic? what about ornette coleman? what about sly stone’s album “there’s a riot goin’ on” or “fresh”? what about edwin hawkins “oh happy day”? that album changed the world! what about the pixies, people? the freakin’ pixies! without that band, there’d be no grunge. come on, pilgrim. (get it? ha-ha.)

a little more objectivity when compiling this list would have been nice. but i suppose you have to look at these “definitive” declarations from such authoritative sources with one eye…
