The Subjected Reader's "Medieval Lit 101"
Important (mostly Western European) medieval literature that I want to (re)read. It’s organized in a vague geographical order:
- Byzantine/Greek: 1-2
- Roman/Italian: 3-10
- French: 11-23
- German: 24-26
- Scandinavian: 27-30
- Ireland/Wales/England: 31-80
These categories are kind of arbitrary since they’re based on countries that didn’t really exist in the medieval period, and people were constantly conquering one another, but…I had to settle on something. I tried to put authors/works in the area they’re most often associated with or that they lived in the longest (e.g. Anselm was born in France, but was the Archbishop of Canterbury, and Christine de Pizan was born in Italy but grew up in France.)
Within each category I tried to arrange them as chronologically as possible (since the dating of manuscripts isn’t always an exact science.)
I’ll be adding to the list over time.
This is The Subjected Reader's list. Only The Subjected Reader can edit it.
