i would add the 1928 silent film, “wings”. i think it won the first best picture oscar.
it’s about two romantic rivals who become pilots in wwi and have a very close, chock-full of subtext (hell, it’s nearly text, although i think men had more demonstrative friendships in the early 20th century) friendship.
one of the two ends up dying in a plane crash, and in his grief, the other kisses his friend during an extended dying scene. it is the first male-male kiss on film. returning from the war, the protagonist visits his friend’s parents in another emotional scene, and finally, hooks up with the girl next door, though he doesn’t seem to have as much affection for her as he did for his lost friend.

So, you set up this list as “Must-See” Queer films. Some of them belong, but do the others belong here because they were directed by gays/lesbians/etc or is there a shadow of gayness? Just curious.
