Festival/World/Epic/ Grand Scale Movies/Kungfu — 2 years ago

I really like an eclectic mix of movies but roughly speaking i prefer slice of life/ world cinema, as a window into other’s lives.
“El Perro”, “Travellers and Magicians” and “Life is Beautiful”
sum up the whimsical and fleeting nature of slice of life movies i love.
“Spring Summer Autumn Winter Spring typifies what scenery means to film making”.

Kungfu and Epics have always been favourites as they satisfy my love for martial arts and mythology.
All things Shaolin, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan interest me.
If it has a mysterious and mythological quality to the movie, all the better.
36th Chamber of Shaolin; Enter the Dragon; The Drunken Master and House of Flying Daggers would be my favourite Kungfu movies.
Gladiator; Troy; Alfred the Great;
Braveheart are great Epics in my book.

Grand Scale Movies like “The Last Emperor” and “Schindler’s List” , “The Godfather”, “Gangs of New York”, I’m keen on for their world history, culture and political flavours.

Japanese Ghibli Animations such as Howl’s Moving Castle and Neko no Ongaeshi are animations i bother watching, because of their fantastic and mysterious stories with clever insights into human behaviour and morality.

NZ Cinema is relatively new on the international scene though i thoroughly recommend “UTU”, “Whale rider” , “Once were warriors”,”Heavenly Creatures”, The World’s Fastest Indian” (NZ Inspired)

In terms of fantasy sci/fi
“Lord of the Rings” and “Star Wars”, “Highlander” type movies win out, followed by Willow, Sleepy Hollow and maybe Neverending Story” when i was a kid.

Hollywood is great for big budget movies like King Kong,Back to the Future, Batman, Ghostbusters, ET, Mars Attacks,Gremlins, Beetlejuice aswell as more serious movies dedicated to American Culture eg Green Mile, Forrest Gump, World According to Garp, Mr Holland’s Opus, Platoon.

I like Eddie Murphy, Black Adder and Monty Python when it comes to comedy.
