Well, i hope he may have got the need for grand spectacle out of his system with the Olympic ceremony, cos his films have become a bit overloaded with his desire for colour, spectacle + movement, at the expense of the subtler characterisation and plot he was once well capable of. I liked his early films with Gong Li, e.g Red Sorgum, Raise the Red Lantern best

The first film of his films I watched was Hero and I was blown away by his use of color. I just watched House of Flying Daggers and was again captivated by the beauty of this film. I was not at all surprised to find out that he is a former photographer. His shots are so well constructed and rich in color. Amazing…
I just read that he is the chief director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing – 2008. I can’t wait.
