The Jewish War by Josephus – includes much information about the Flavian dynasty

The Later Roman Empire by Ammianus Marcellinus – the surviving books of the last great Roman historian’s attempt to cover the period where Tacitus left off. It covers up to the battle of Adrianople, the first of a series of events which lead ultimately to the sack of Rome by the Goths in 410.

The Histories by Tacitus – A recount of AD 69, the year of four emperors, following the suicide of Nero.

Finally, I added two recently published books on Roman history: Rubicon by Tom Holland which tells the story of the final years of the Republic; and Augustus by Anthony Everitt who also wrote a biography of Cicero and has recently published a biography of the emperor Hadrian.

This brings the list to a tidy 50 volumes. I don’t plan on making any more changes/additions for some time.

Updates — 2 years ago

For the primary sources, I have decided to replace items on this list with editions from Penguin Classics which I prefer because of the quality of their translation, the copious notes, and the invaluable introductions/commentaries.

I also replaced the Modern library edition of the unabridged work of Gibbon with the Penguin Classics edition which, after some research, is the most highly rated.
