klagregory's "Books For The Well-Rounded Person"

Add to my lists | Print this list

There is more than one way to be well-educated. One must learn to get along well with others, find a vocation, find companionship and make a home. Along the way, the body, mind and soul all need tending to. It’s a big job, the work of a lifetime.

I’ve put together a list of books, mostly reference, which will make the job easier. I’ve not listed fiction but given several reference guides that have their own exhaustive lists. And there is only a small amount of history, science, etc, to give an idea of the topics which you should familiarize yourself with.

I’ve included some parenting/children’s books that I have found helpful. Once again, I did not list children’s fiction but The Read-Aloud Handbook has an extensive reading list that lays out a good start to any home library.

I included a Latin self-study guide because I think all English-speaking persons would benefit from a bit of Latin. Further, I think all Americans should also learn at least one other foreign language but I couldn’t decide which to represent on the list.

The list admittedly comes from my own limited world-view as a white Protestant American, so your cultural/religious/ethnic mileage may vary.
