I’m leaning toward each director’s best (or best-known) work, but if Sarris’ auteur theory has any validity at all, five should be a good enough sample to determine if a director is any good or not. Mostly I’m making this list, because the official ones are difficult for me to use. The 14 directors, for the record, are Chaplin, Flaherty, Ford, Griffith, Hawks, Hitchcock, Keaton, Fritz Lang, Lubitsch, Murnau, Max Ophuls, Renoir, Von Sternberg, and Welles.
