Gospel Music Association's "Dove Award Rap/Hip Hop Album Award Winners"

Add to my lists | Print this list

Since 1969, the Dove Awards have been presented to those recognized by Christian music artists, producers, and other industry insiders. In 1976, recognizing the increasing diversity of musical styles utilizing Christian lyrics, the Gospel Music Association broke apart their "Album of the Year" category into several smaller, more niched genre categories. This category, however, wasn’t created until 1991. In 1994 and 1995 there weren’t enough eligible entries so no award was handed out.

Not well-thought out list — 4 years ago

The winners for 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 may contain some rap elements but they’d be better tagged as “dance/pop” or “techno”. There’s also a tendency to lean towards more pop-influenced rap at the expense of harder underground styles.

Of course, the Dove Awards don’t really have a history of “cutting edge” choices…
