100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know

Add to my lists | Print this list

The editors of the American Heritage® dictionaries have compiled a list of 100 words they recommend every high school graduate should know.

Please note: If anyone has concerns about specific words, please let me know via http://perlle.43people.com. Or email me at lrperlle at yahoo dot com.

Just deleting words screws up the list for everyone else who has the list.

Also, someone changed the title of the list, and I had to change it back. Please do not that.

I'm A Tutor — 4 years ago

I think this list is SUPER!!

Untitled — 4 years ago

With 2 years to go until I graduate, 63% isn’t that bad.

hm... — 4 years ago

Going into my junior year of college and I got 67%…I must say though that apart from using these ridiculously long and complicated words to help lengthen my term papers, I really don’t think I would actually use these words in normal conversation….

Hmmm.. — 4 years ago

61 percent. I should be better than that.

Good List — 5 years ago

No, this list is fantastic. Can you live a long, happy life and never use the word ‘moiety’? Yes, of course.

But if you read the New York Times front page every day, by the end of the year you will have seen all of these words. (Except perhaps moiety.)

i'm a senior in college. — 5 years ago

and while i know most, a couple of these words are flat out random. i don’t understand how some are at all relevant to a high school graduate’s education. maybe it’s because i’m an IR major.

duh — 5 years ago

Well, I felt a little dumb reading through this list. The first go through, I knew 84%. The rest I looked up on dictionary.com and now I know 100%. Yeah, I know I’m a dork.

Untitled — 5 years ago

I’m Canadian, and in grade 11, and I know quite a few of them… it seems to me most of these are used in classic literature, or math/science textbooks. Good list, but I wouldn’t call it practical.

Offensive Icon for Unctuous — 5 years ago

Seriously, someone should change the picture for unctuous. Not funny. Put in a picture of Uriah Heep from David Copperfield.
