100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know

Add to my lists | Print this list

The editors of the American Heritage® dictionaries have compiled a list of 100 words they recommend every high school graduate should know.

Please note: If anyone has concerns about specific words, please let me know here. Or email me at lrperlle at yahoo dot com.
Just deleting words screws up the list for everyone else who has the list.
Also, someone changed the title of the list, and I had to change it back. Please do not that.

A pretty good list. — 3 years ago

Given how few of them puzzled me I think I need to move on to the 100 words that a college graduate should know.

Or do we break it down into words for associates, bachelors, masters and PHD?

I cast my vote for graduated lists for graduate students.

I don’t know who has been putting in the pictures, but they are great!

Important concepts — 3 years ago

Some of these are concepts that are more important to understand as the broader ideas and history they convey, rather than simply as vocabulary words, esp the socio-political and scientific words.

knowing — 3 years ago

I think people will have different ideas of what “knowing” means. For me, I consider that I know a word if I can give someone its definition. If not, I’m familiar with it, but it doesn’t count.

Most of these are familiar to me. I use at least half of them, from time to time. But there’s no point in feeling guilty about not knowing them or in general in having a small vocabulary, unless you really have something to say.

Here’s a word I’ve had to use once or twice, that you probably won’t ever need:

heteroskedasticity.

enjoy!

I did OK but I need to bone up — 3 years ago

Some of these I think I recognize from context, but I’d be hardpressed if someone said “What does ‘obseqious’ mean?” to give a cogent, concise answer so I didn’t count those. Guess I need to invest in more effort with vocabulary words to develop a more florid (G) prose.
