This is a list of the countries of the world as of 4/22/06 and I found it at the following website:

It’s as definitive as you get in an ever changing world… According to the website, "With the addition of Timor-Leste (East Timor) in May of 2002, there are now 193 independent sovereign states in the world, 61 dependent areas, and five disputed territories. "
