Paul Schrader - Film Canon
A definitive list titled "Canon Fodder" from film critic, screenwriter, and director Paul Schrader, taken from his (in)famous article in the September/October 2006 issue of Film Comment magazine.
There are 60 films in the list, divided into Gold (1-20), Silver (21-40), and Bronze (41-60). One of his stated limitations in compiling the list was to allow no more than one film from the same director.

(Note in his responses that he says that Rosellini’s Viaggio in Italia was omitted by mistake, as he prefers Salvatore Giuliano to The Battle of Algiers, which should come off the list. The list below is the list as published.)
