Darbicus's "The 1,000 Must See Films"

Add to my lists | Print this list

1,000 Films that every self-respecting film buff must see.

This is not really considered a top 1,000 films list in the traditional sense. These are merely the first 1,000 films that every film buff should see. I’m currently working on a second list for this same topic of another 1,000 films.

Untitled — 3 years ago

Removed Ararat (Egoyan) for Paris Belongs to Us (Rivette)

Swap Out — 4 years ago

Anna Christie (Clarence Brown) was removed in favor of There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Another Update — 4 years ago

Subbed out Steven Spielberg’s “Duel” for Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Before the Revolution.” Also removed Stan Brakhage’s “Black Ice” for Oliver Hirschbigel’s “Downfall.”

Films To Be Added — 4 years ago

Four Films Have Been Deleted to make room for 4 new films that needed to be on the list. When this thing stops being a you-know-what, I’ll be adding:

Haxan (Witchcraft Through the Ages)

Man Bites Dog

Mouchette

32 Short Films About Glenn Gould

I note the absence of 2 by Mizoguchi- Chikamatsu Monogatari and Osaka Elegy- which i think should be included, but presume Sansho, Ugetsu and Story of Late Chrysanthemums (at least) are still to come. And you seem to like Brakhage- more than some earlier shorts by Len Lye and Norman Mclaren and European avant-garde.

Well, so far this is shaping up to be a seriously good list- and a lot of hard work too!.
